Will a mahogany door warp without an overhang?

It can, in southern climates. Direct sun and rain cycles cause cupping and checking in real wood. We strongly recommend a covered entry — or step up to our WeatherCraft mahogany, which is thermally modified to stand up to the weather without an overhang.

What's the best finish for a wood door in the Southeast?

Spar varnish or a marine-grade exterior finish (e.g., Sikkens Cetol, Sansin). Avoid oil-based interior stains for any exterior install.

How often does a mahogany door need re-staining?

Every 1–2 years if uncovered, every 3–5 on a covered entry, with an annual finish inspection regardless.

Can I install a wood door on a south-facing exposure?

Only with an overhang of at least 3 ft. South sun plus Georgia heat is the harshest combination for any wood door.

What's the difference between this and WeatherCraft mahogany?

Our WeatherCraft mahogany is thermally modified (a process called torrefaction) — baked at 400–600°F to drive out the organic matter that lets wood rot and warp, so it stands up to weather and never needs re-staining. Regular mahogany is the same species un-baked, with all its authentic wood character (and its maintenance needs).

Can I order a wood door in a different species?

Yes — we can build in a range of wood species on custom order. 4–6 month lead time.
