What is torrefaction?

A heat treatment that bakes wood at 400–600°F in an oxygen-free kiln. The heat breaks down hemicellulose and removes bound moisture and sugars — the parts of wood that absorb water, attract insects, and decay. What remains is structurally pure cellulose: chemically stable, dimensionally locked, weather-resistant.

Why is WeatherCraft wood darker than regular mahogany?

The thermal-modification process caramelizes the natural lignin in the wood. The color is permanent, even-toned, and stable in UV. Most customers describe it as a deep walnut or coffee tone.

Will WeatherCraft wood crack?

No, in any climate we ship to. The dimensional stability of WeatherCraft mahogany is comparable to engineered hardwood. Direct sun, freeze-thaw cycles, and salt-air exposure don't cause checking.

How does WeatherCraft wood compare to Accoya?

Accoya is acetylated wood (chemically modified); our WeatherCraft mahogany is thermally modified (torrefaction). Both stand up to the weather; WeatherCraft is darker and warmer in color and uses no chemicals.

Maintenance vs. regular mahogany?

Regular mahogany needs re-staining every 3–5 years on a covered entry; 1–2 years uncovered. WeatherCraft mahogany needs ZERO re-staining. Wipe it twice a year and you're done.

Is WeatherCraft wood really fire-treated?

Yes — but in an oxygen-free kiln, so it doesn't burn. The process is called thermal modification (torrefaction) and has been used on Scandinavian timber since the 1800s.
